In South Texas, we like to make our own rules. One thing that we have learned while serving the San Antonio community at our bar is that a good cocktail can have a few contradictions and doesn’t have to play into anyone’s expectations. Another thing we know is that San Antonians like to kick up the heat! That’s why we created our Longhorn Smash cocktail recipe that features refreshing grapefruit, spicy Chiltepin peppers, and Texas bourbon.

Enjoy this uniquely Texan concoction on a shady porch, poolside, or paired with your grilled favorites; just remember to toast to some Texas hospitality and thank your friends down South.

Longhorn Smash Recipe

In a shaker add:

  • 1.5oz – Your Favorite Bourbon
  • 1oz – Fresh Grapefruit Juice
  • 0.5oz – Fresh Lime Juice
  • 0.5oz – Chiltepin Syrup*

*Make your simple syrup ahead of time and add Chiltepin peppers to taste. Be careful not to add too many, because they pack some heat!

For the perfect simple syrup:

Add equal parts sugar and water to a small saucepan over medium heat and stir till dissolved. Infuse with desired ingredients. Let cool and transfer to a sealed jar and store in the refrigerator for up to a month.

The Final Touches

Shake, pour over ice, and top with sparkling water.

Garnish with sliced grapefruit or lime.
